Feeding hundreds of children was an all day job for kitchen staff. Vast cooking vats bubbled and steamed with basic beans, rice and vegetables and woodsmoke wafted round the orphanage.<\/p>\n

There were dining rooms & kitchens for each dormitory block and smaller kitchen areas tucked away in corners of other buildings. Refurbishments in many of the kitchens and better ventilation solutions helped improve mealtime environments for the children, although food shortages were all too frequent.<\/p>\n

Food, along with other utensils, was stored in a locked room by Madam Director\u2019s quarters. It was a daily problem to keep rodents and weevils at bay.<\/p>\n<\/div>
